Congressional Republicans demand answers from Ivy League schools over price-fixing collusion allegations
A group of House and Senate Republicans are demanding answers from Ivy League institutions about alleged price-fixing regarding their tuition costs.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA), House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH), Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), and Rep. Scott Fitzgerald (R-WI) sent letters to Ivy League universities Tuesday expressing concern over potential antitrust violations and collusion over the continued rising cost of tuition.
“The House and Senate Committees are concerned that the Ivy League member institutions’ coordinated practices and alleged collusion violate the Sherman Act and that the institutions continue to benefit from their prior collusion despite no longer having an antitrust exemption,” the letter said.
“The structure and operation of the higher education market strongly suggests the market is not functioning properly and is subject to widespread violations of antitrust laws,” the letter continued.
The letters sent to the universities of Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, Pennsylvania, and Yale ask for any documents the schools have dating back to 2019 between them and other institutions and college organizations regarding pricing and similar topics. The congressmen asked the documents to be handed over to the committees by April 22.
TAX RECKONING COMING FOR BESIEGED UNIVERSITIES AT HANDS OF GOP
High tuition costs for colleges and universities have been a problem in recent years for students seeking higher education. The investigation by the congressional committee heads came months after a lawsuit was filed against the College Board over allegations it overcharged students of divorced or separated parents for tuition at various institutions.
The letters are the latest instance of congressional Republicans scrutinizing higher education, specifically Ivy League schools, over a variety of topics, including actions to combat antisemitism, which has spiked on campuses in recent years.
