Poll: Republicans identify key issues to attract Latino voters away from Democrats.
A Shift in Latino Voter Loyalty: Democrats Losing Ground
A recent polling indicates that while a majority of Latino voters still lean towards Democratic candidates, their loyalty to the party has started to waver in recent years.
For a long time, Democrats have enjoyed the support of the Hispanic vote, a crucial voting bloc in both local and national elections. However, there has been a gradual shift as Latinos have expressed differing opinions on issues like crime and public safety.
Growing Lack of Trust
According to a recent Axios/Ipsos poll, 32% of Latino voters now believe that neither party truly cares about them. This signifies a significant increase from the previous year when only 25% felt equally disregarded by both parties.
While Latinos still tend to favor Democrats on key issues such as abortion, climate, and immigration, Republicans have gained an edge in areas like crime, public safety, and the economy. This could potentially give the GOP an advantage in the upcoming 2024 cycle.
Concerns for the Future
The poll also revealed a growing sense of unease among Latino voters, with 40% expressing that it’s currently a “bad time to be a Latino or Hispanic person in America.” This marks an 11-point increase from the previous year.
Despite these shifts, Democrats still maintain a stronger foothold among Hispanic voters. The poll showed that 30% of the bloc believes the Democratic Party cares more about them, while only 11% feel the opposite.
Interestingly, the poll also highlighted that a majority of voters believe neither party excels in handling immigration or crime. Additionally, 38% feel that neither party is adept at managing the federal budget, which could become a contentious issue in the 2024 elections.
The Axios/Ipsos poll surveyed 1,116 Hispanic voters between June 2-9 and has a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.
