Republicans pitch tying debt ceiling increase to California wildfire aid
President-elect Donald Trump and Republicans are reportedly considering discussing the possibility of trading aid for the Los Angeles wildfires for an increase to the debt ceiling.
The plan to find a way to get Trump his preferred policy of avoiding a high-stakes debt standoff in return for assisting California in a historic recovery effort started to unfold during a dinner at Mar-a-Lago on Sunday night, according to Politico.
The identities of those in attendance are not known, but some were caucus leaders and appropriators with major influence on the budget reconciliations. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who will guide the House in ensuring it meets the June deadline of exhausting its borrowing authority, wasn’t at the dinner.
Trading aid now for political gain later is fraught with problems, as the prospect of increasing the debt ceiling to account for the wildfire relief could be perceived as politically motivated by House members on both sides of the aisle.
There are also concerns the move could kill the reconciliation plan, which hasn’t been finalized. Whether Republicans attempt to push one reconciliation bill or two, they are trying to use their majorities in the House and Senate to ensure victories at the border and extend the 2017 Trump tax cuts. There are concerns that including a debt limit increase could be fatal as budget hawks in the GOP caucus are adamant they don’t want to see increased spending.
At the end of last year, Congress passed a $100 billion disaster aid bill, but many people are wondering if more money will be needed to address the unprecedented and historical fires in Los Angeles. So far, at least 24 people have died, and 40,000 acres have burned.
In the next couple of weeks, Congress could likely be called to vote on authorizing funding for community development projects from the Department of Housing and Urban Development to rebuild.
On Saturday evening, Trump discussed the wildfires with a group of Republicans from California, New York, and New Jersey, Politico reported.
Meanwhile, Trump has threatened Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) that he would withhold federal funding for disaster relief in a recent attack in their water wars.
