Republicans support releasing ethics report if Trump nominates Gaetz for another post – Washington Examiner
The article discusses the divided stance among Republicans regarding the release of an ethics report concerning former Congressman Matt Gaetz.Initially, the House Republicans rejected two proposals that would have forced the Ethics Committee to disclose the report. Though, there is a suggestion that some members would reconsider their position on the report’s release if Gaetz were to be nominated for a prominent role or run for office again.Representative Don Bacon from Nebraska indicated that while many republicans supported the decision to keep the report from being released, their opinions might change based on future circumstances related to Gaetz.
Republicans support releasing ethics report if Trump nominates Gaetz for another post
Republicans killed two measures that would have compelled the House Ethics Committee to release its report on former Rep. Matt Gaetz, but some would be willing to reverse their stance if the former Florida congressman is nominated for another position.
“Many of us voted to support the precedent but will feel differently if he’s nominated for a high-level position or runs for office. I’m not the only one. There’s many,” Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) told the Washington Examiner.
MEET THE NEW CONGRESS: THE HOUSE AND SENATE FRESHMEN ELECTED TO SERVE NEXT YEAR
Gaetz had been the subject of an investigation by the committee over allegations of sex trafficking and sex with a minor, accusations he has denied. The Florida Republican resigned from his House seat last month after being named President-elect Donald Trump‘s pick for attorney general, but he later withdrew himself from the nomination after it appeared doomed.
Though he won’t lead Trump’s justice department, he’s said he wants to “continu[e] the fight,” but “maybe from a different post.” Trump has not said if he would like Gaetz to be in a different position in his administration.
TRUMP’S ‘NO TAXES ON OVERTIME’ PROPOSAL: WHAT TO KNOW
On Thursday, House Republicans, except Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA), voted against a pair of resolutions aimed at releasing the report that doomed his nomination. The opposing GOP congressmen argued it is against the precedent of the ethics committee to release a report about a former congressman, as their jurisdiction over representatives ends once they leave Congress.
Gaetz is not a candidate for his former seat in the upcoming special election next year, but has been floated as a potential candidate for the 2026 Florida gubernatorial election. Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is term-limited, setting up a wide-open GOP primary in the increasingly Republican Sunshine State.
The former congressman could also be picked to fill Sen. Marco Rubio’s (R-FL) Senate seat, which is being vacated so the Florida senator can be Trump’s nominee for Secretary of State. Gaetz’s appointment to the seat appears unlikely, as he has not been mentioned among the reported candidates DeSantis is considering to select for the seat.
Trump has announced his picks for many other Cabinet positions, including former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi as a replacement nominee for Gaetz.
While the Gaetz ethics report appears to be a closed matter — for now — House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) told Fox News he believes it is “not a moot matter” and said that “we’ll see if our former colleague is presented for any other administration positions.”
