“Now that Bob Casey is in the race of his life, he’s hoping Pennsylvanians will forget he opposed building a border wall and even supported mass amnesty and taxpayer-funded health care for illegal immigrants,” said Philip Letsou, a spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee. “Casey will say anything for power, even if that means lying to Pennsylvanians.”
Casey has a history of voting for stricter immigration policies when running for office and against them in off-years since his election in 2006. However, this year, while running for Senate, he has supported legislation to combat fentanyl trafficking at the border.
In the past, Casey voted against implementing a border fence but supported a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants. When running for office in 2006, he opposed federal benefits for illegal immigrants and supported a border fence.
“Bob Casey’s complicit in this crisis. He’s had 18 years in the Senate to take decisive action and help secure the border,” said David McCormick, Casey’s GOP rival for the Senate seat. “Instead, he’s spent his time enabling weak policies that have made Pennsylvanians less safe and hurt our economy. Our commonwealth deserves a leader who will make shutting down the border to illegal immigration his top priority.”
Despite the shifts in his stance, Casey’s communications director defended him, highlighting his history of passing bipartisan bills that strengthen border security. The director also criticized McCormick for not supporting the latest immigration bill.
Casey is considered vulnerable this year as Pennsylvania is one of the states that President Joe Biden narrowly won in 2020.
