Retired flight attendant honors September 11 with 300-mile cart push.
Retired Flight Attendant Honors 9/11 Victims with Epic Journey
On September 11, 2001, the world changed forever. Four airplanes were hijacked, and one of them, United Airlines Flight 175, crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center. Paul “Paulie” Veneto, a United Airlines flight attendant, was scheduled to be on that flight, but fate had other plans.
Mr. Veneto lost dear friends that day, and like many others in the aviation field, he found it difficult to return to work. However, he knew he had to find a way to honor the lives that were lost.
In 2021, twenty years after the attacks, Mr. Veneto embarked on an incredible journey. He took a beverage cart, donated to him by an airline, and pushed it 220 miles from Boston-Logan International Airport to Ground Zero in Manhattan. This symbolic route mirrored the path taken by one of the hijacked airplanes. This was the beginning of what he called “Paulie’s Push.”
The following year, he walked 35 miles from Washington-Dulles International Airport to the Pentagon National Memorial. And now, in 2023, he is undertaking his longest journey yet—over 300 miles from Newark-Liberty International Airport to the Flight 93 National Memorial in Stoystown, Pennsylvania.
Mr. Veneto’s beverage cart is not just a cart. It carries bottled water, nutritious snacks, and two sets of laminated photos of the flight crews from September 11. On top of the cart, there are photos of United 175 and the crew of United Flight 93. The cart is equipped with a GPS and camera system, allowing his followers to track his progress in real time.
But it’s not just about the cart. Along the way, Mr. Veneto meets people who have been following his journey online. They share their stories of September 11, and he listens. For some, it’s the first time they’ve talked about it. These encounters are powerful and emotional, and they fuel his determination to keep going.
The push to Shanksville, where Flight 93 crashed, began on August 14. Mr. Veneto’s journey is a testament to resilience, remembrance, and the human spirit. He pushes the cart not just for himself, but for all those who were lost on that fateful day.
