RFK Jr. reverses stance on abortion: ‘Woman’s right to choose always’

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Campaign Clarifies ⁤Stance on Abortion

Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s campaign‍ found itself in damage control mode on Sunday night, as they sought to clarify comments made earlier in the‍ day regarding his position on abortion. In a statement, the campaign explained that Kennedy‌ had misunderstood a question from an NBC reporter ⁢in a noisy exhibit hall at the‌ Iowa State Fair.

“Mr. Kennedy’s position ‌on abortion is ‌that it is always the woman’s right to choose. He does not support legislation banning abortion.”

Reversal of Stance

This clarification came after Kennedy had initially stated that he would support a ⁤federal‌ abortion ban after the first three months of pregnancy. However, he‌ later expressed that the‌ state should have‍ a say in restricting abortions after that point, ‌indicating his support for a‌ federal ban.

“Once a child is viable outside the womb, I⁤ think then the state has an interest in ⁣protecting the child,” Kennedy explained. He also emphasized his belief in “medical freedom” and individuals’ ability to make ⁢their own choices.

When asked directly ⁣if ‍he would sign a three-month federal ‍abortion ban, ‍Kennedy responded with a definitive “Yes, I would.”

Reactions and Challenges

These comments garnered praise from anti-abortion groups, such as ⁣Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, who commended Kennedy for his departure from the Democratic Party’s stance on the issue. However, Kennedy’s reversal has also drawn criticism from within his own party, particularly due to ⁣his controversial views on vaccines and other matters.

Despite his bid to challenge President Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination in 2024, Kennedy faces an uphill battle as polling currently shows the president with a significant lead over any potential challenger.
