Rhode Island Dem Rep. David Cicilline to Retire From Congress In June

Rep. David Cicilline, D-R.I., will resign in June to start running for office. Rhode Island-based foundation.

This story was first reported by The Boston Globe. Cicilline’s Office confirmed the report via an emailed statement to Epoch Times.

In a “a href=”https://cicilline.house.gov/press-release/cicilline-to-lead-rhode-island-foundation”>statement Cicilline’s Office announced his resignation. “Today, Congressman David Cicilline (D-RI), currently serving his seventh term in the United States House of Representatives, announced he has been selected to lead the Rhode Island Foundation as its President and CEO and will be leaving elected office effective June 1, 2023.”

It is available in its “About” Page describes the Rhode Island Foundation’s mission as a charitable organization that supports the financial needs of Rhode Islanders who are financially insecure.

“For more than 100 years, the Rhode Island Foundation has been dedicated to improving the lives of Rhode Islanders,” The website says. “We partner with generous individuals, families, organizations, and corporations that share our commitment to the state, as well as with nonprofit organizations that provide the ‘boots-on-the-ground’ services that make Rhode Island a better place to live, work, and play.”

Cicilline spoke out about his decision to quit Congress. “Serving the people of Rhode Island’s First Congressional District has been the honor of my lifetime.”

“As President and CEO of one of the largest and oldest community foundations in the nation, I look forward to expanding on the work I have led for nearly thirty years in helping to improve the lives of all Rhode Islanders,” He went on.

“For over a decade, Rhode Island residents have trusted me with the sacred duty to represent them at Congress. This responsibility is one I take seriously every day in order to improve the lives of Rhode Island residents and families. Although the opportunity to lead the Rhode Island Foundation was not expected, it is an amazing chance to make a greater and more meaningful impact on the lives the residents of Rhode Island. As the CEO of Rhode Island Foundation I will bring the same energy, commitment and enthusiasm that I brought to the office. My goal is to help all Rhode Islanders achieve economic security, quality healthcare, and education that will lead them to success.

“I am extremely grateful for the support of the people of the First Congressional District, my dedicated staff, and the help of the many organizations and individuals that I have had the privilege to partner with over the past twelve years. While my role will change in the months ahead, my commitment to serving Rhode Islanders will remain as strong as ever as I lead the Rhode Island Foundation through this next exciting period of transformational change in our state.”

Cicilline’s retirement will temporarily increase the power and influence of the GOP majority.

Current Republicans have 222 votes to a>=”https://www.theepochtimes.com/t-democrats”>Democrats‘ 212.

Cicilline will step down as governor of Rhode Island. The governor can call for a special election.

Cicilline received 63.8 percent of the vote in his last reelection campaign in 2022 to Republicans’ 36.2%. Cicilline’s retirement is unlikely to result in a GOP takingover of the seat.
