Ridley Scott’s ‘Napoleon’ debuts in Paris.
Paris Premiere of Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” Biopic
PARIS (Reuters) – The cast of Ridley Scott’s highly anticipated biopic “Napoleon” descended upon Paris for the film’s global premiere on Tuesday night, gracing the red carpet just days after the end of strikes in Hollywood.
Joaquin Phoenix takes on the iconic role of Napoleon, a figure both revered and criticized in France. In the film, Napoleon is portrayed as a ruthless military tactician with a vulnerable side, brought to light by his wife, the empress Josephine de Beauharnais, played by Vanessa Kirby.
Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group Chairman and CEO Tom Rothman expressed relief that the movie’s release coincided with the end of the months-long strike by the Screen Actors Guild (SAG).
“I feel very fortunate the strike ended in time,” Rothman told Reuters.
Kirby, who stepped in to play Josephine after Jodie Comer’s scheduling conflicts, revealed that her performance drew inspiration from various descriptions of the aristocrat, who was eventually divorced by Napoleon for failing to produce an heir for the empire.
Kirby acknowledged the challenge of being “the feminine in that extremely masculine world” and admired Beauharnais for her dignified demeanor throughout the public divorce.
Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Scott and cinematographer Dariusz Wolski managed to create elaborate battle scenes depicting Napoleon’s conquests in Austerlitz and Moscow, as well as his infamous defeat in Waterloo.
French actor Tahar Rahim, who portrays Revolutionary-era politician Paul Barras, emphasized that while Napoleon may have been a tyrant and a “man of power,” he was also “still a man, crazy in love with a woman.”
