A coalition of right-wing parties have returned to power in Italy after its former center-left cabinet got involved with controversies at home and abroad.

On Wednesday, former European Central Bank President Mario Draghi delivered a speech to Parliament shortly after assuming the mandate to form a new cabinet. Draghi said he would rely on a broader support, including by the right-wing party, League of the North, to defeat COVID-19 and restore economic growth.

This came after the center-left cabinet of Giuseppe Conte collapsed due to resignations of several left-wing lawmakers.

“There’s this incredible trust and confidence in Draghi’s ability to navigate these very complex political landscape,”  stated Cecilia Sottilotta, assistant professor of International Relations and Global Politics at the American University of Rome.

Italy’s previous cabinet came under fire for mismanaging COVID-19 and allegedly enabling the meddling in the 2020 U.S. elections. Draghi said he will focus on internal affairs in coming months.
