Right-wing Ecuadorian Presidential ⁤Candidate Assassinated After ⁤Political​ Rally

On Wednesday, right-wing Ecuadorian presidential candidate Fernando‍ Villavicencio was tragically assassinated. He ⁢was shot multiple times after leaving ‌a⁢ political rally in Ecuador’s capital city of Quito.

Villavicencio’s family confirmed his death,⁣ according to Bloomberg News. The incident took place‍ at a school where‍ the political event was being held.

Villavicencio, ‌a journalist and opponent of former leftist President Rafael Correa, had a tumultuous history. In 2014, he was sentenced to 18 months in prison for allegedly slandering Correa.‍ He⁢ spent three years as a‍ fugitive before being‍ granted political asylum in Peru.

Upon his return to ‍Ecuador, Villavicencio accused the government of misusing⁣ public resources ‌in the commercialization of ‌crude oil with private company Petrochina. He estimated that this resulted in‍ billions of dollars in losses for the country.

His campaign‌ focused on building safety⁢ in ​Ecuador, with ‍five pillars: citizen, food, economic, environmental, and health. Villavicencio was elected ‍as a national‍ congress member in the ⁤2021 elections and had been a victim of a previous attack‍ at his residence in September 2022.

As an investigative⁢ journalist, ⁢he played a crucial role‌ in exposing corruption in various sectors, including⁣ oil, mining, electricity, ‌telecommunications, and criminal structures.
