Tom Emmer, labeled a ‘RINO,’ withdraws from Speaker race shortly after securing GOP nomination.

‘RINO’⁢ Tom Emmer Drops ‌Out of Speaker Race Hours ⁢After ‌Winning GOP Nomination

House Majority Whip⁢ Tom Emmer made a ‍surprising decision on Tuesday, ⁢withdrawing from the race to become the next speaker⁢ of the House. This came shortly after he narrowly secured the Republican‌ Party’s ⁢nomination for the position.

The final⁣ vote count showed Emmer with 117 votes, followed by Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana with 97 votes. Five GOP members voted for other candidates.

Former President Donald Trump wasted no time expressing his opinion on the matter. He‌ took to Truth Social, his preferred⁤ social media platform, to post a statement calling Emmer’s potential speakership a “tragic ⁤mistake.” Trump emphasized that Emmer does ‍not align with the values of the‍ Make America Great Again movement⁣ and⁢ criticized his past actions.

Trump questioned Emmer’s loyalty, despite the congressman now speaking favorably about him. The former president warned that voting for Emmer, whom he ‌labeled a “Globalist RINO,” would be a grave error.

NBC News reported ‍that a source familiar with Emmer’s ⁣campaign⁤ to secure votes said Trump’s social media post made it ⁤impossible for⁣ him to gain the necessary support.

As news broke of Emmer’s withdrawal, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene voiced‍ her opposition to his candidacy. ‌She ⁣stated that the next⁤ speaker of the House should reflect the values ‍and views of ⁢Republican voters, which she believes Emmer does not.

Greene cited Emmer’s ‍past votes against Trump’s policies, such as his opposition to‍ the transgender ban in the military and his support ‌for the ‍Democrats’ Respect for ⁢Marriage Act. She argued that⁣ these positions are⁤ not in line with Republican values and therefore ⁤disqualify him from being speaker.

According to House GOP conference⁢ chair Rep. Elise Stefanik, the remaining candidates for speaker include Johnson, as well as Reps. Byron Donalds of ⁢Florida, Chuck Fleischmann ⁤of Tennessee, Mark Green of Tennessee, Kevin Hern of ‌Oklahoma, and Roger Williams⁣ of Texas.

The Republicans have scheduled a candidates’ forum for Tuesday night ⁤to further discuss the speaker race.
