Tom Emmer, labeled a ‘RINO,’ withdraws from Speaker race shortly after securing GOP nomination.
‘RINO’ Tom Emmer Drops Out of Speaker Race Hours After Winning GOP Nomination
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer made a surprising decision on Tuesday, withdrawing from the race to become the next speaker of the House. This came shortly after he narrowly secured the Republican Party’s nomination for the position.
The final vote count showed Emmer with 117 votes, followed by Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana with 97 votes. Five GOP members voted for other candidates.

Former President Donald Trump wasted no time expressing his opinion on the matter. He took to Truth Social, his preferred social media platform, to post a statement calling Emmer’s potential speakership a “tragic mistake.” Trump emphasized that Emmer does not align with the values of the Make America Great Again movement and criticized his past actions.
Trump questioned Emmer’s loyalty, despite the congressman now speaking favorably about him. The former president warned that voting for Emmer, whom he labeled a “Globalist RINO,” would be a grave error.
NBC News reported that a source familiar with Emmer’s campaign to secure votes said Trump’s social media post made it impossible for him to gain the necessary support.
As news broke of Emmer’s withdrawal, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene voiced her opposition to his candidacy. She stated that the next speaker of the House should reflect the values and views of Republican voters, which she believes Emmer does not.
Tom Emmer has dropped out of the race for Speaker.
We need a Speaker of the House that reflects the values and views of Republicans across the country, and that includes supporting President Trump.

Greene cited Emmer’s past votes against Trump’s policies, such as his opposition to the transgender ban in the military and his support for the Democrats’ Respect for Marriage Act. She argued that these positions are not in line with Republican values and therefore disqualify him from being speaker.
According to House GOP conference chair Rep. Elise Stefanik, the remaining candidates for speaker include Johnson, as well as Reps. Byron Donalds of Florida, Chuck Fleischmann of Tennessee, Mark Green of Tennessee, Kevin Hern of Oklahoma, and Roger Williams of Texas.
5:30 PM was the deadline for announced candidates for Speaker. Candidate Forum at 6 PM.
Officially Announced Candidates to the House Republican Conference include:

The Republicans have scheduled a candidates’ forum for Tuesday night to further discuss the speaker race.
