Riots Shake Dublin After Knife Attack Injures Children and Others
Riots erupted in Dublin, Ireland’s capital, on Thursday evening and early Friday morning following a stabbing attack that left five people wounded, including three children and a school care assistant, in the city center.
According to NBC News, between 200 and 300 people participated in the riots, setting fire to buses and police vehicles, and causing public transportation to shut down.
The riots were sparked by the spread of “misinformation” about the alleged attacker’s nationality, as reported by the New York Times.
Police have a suspect in custody, described as a man in his 40s or 50s, but no further details have been provided.
According to Gript Media, the suspect is an Algerian national who arrived in Ireland several decades ago.

Ireland’s national police commissioner, Drew Harris, blamed a “complete lunatic faction driven by far-right ideology” for the riots, as reported by The Irish News.
Helen McEntee, the country’s minister for justice, condemned the chaos and looting that followed the attacks, vowing that it ”will not be tolerated.” She referred to the rioters as “thugs” and “criminals.”
Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar announced plans to introduce new laws to address social media incitement in response to the riots, according to The Irish News.
According to Axios, 34 people were arrested on charges related to public order and threats, with 32 individuals scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
“These are scenes that we have not seen in decades,” said Harris, as reported by Axios. “But what is clear is that people have been radicalized through social media over the internet.”
“Those involved brought shame on Dublin, brought shame on Ireland, and brought shame on their families and themselves,” Varadkar stated at a news conference on Friday, according to Reuters.

“As a country, we need to reclaim Ireland. We need to take it away from the cowerers who hide behind masks and try to terrify us with their violence,” Varadkar added.
According to the BBC, two of the stabbing victims, a 5-year-old girl and a school assistant who shielded children from the attacker, are in critical condition.
