RNC Polling: Abortion Is Not The Winning Issue Dems Think It Is
Most Americans paying attention to abortion issues disagree with the Democratic party’s extreme stances on abortion, polling conducted by the Republican National Committee found.
The Daily Wire was the first to obtain the RNC polling which found that when voters who are engaged in the abortion debate are asked about specific abortion policy, they reject the abortion stances embraced by Democratic lawmakers who refuse to name any limits they support on abortion.
The polling was conducted after news broke about the leaked Supreme Court draft opinion and found that “even with increased media attention, abortion is not the winning issue Democrats think it is, and the economy, crime, and the border remain the top issues for voters,” the committee said in a release.
Furthermore, only 1 in 5 independent voters said abortion is the main factor for them in deciding which candidate to vote for, and only 16% of independent voters said abortion should be allowed at any time during the mother’s pregnancy and for any reason.
While abortion is an important issue for many voters, it is only the top issue for 9% of voters, the polling found, and when asked if they would be more likely, less likely, or the same amount as likely to vote in the midterm elections based off the recent abortion news, 49% of Democrats said they were more likely, compared to the 48% of Republicans (the RNC called this a “statistical tie between the two parties”).
The polling comes after Politico revealed a draft opinion last week showing that the justices would likely rule to overturn Roe v. Wade. The news has sparked nationwide protests and frenzy as pro-abortion rights supporters grapple with the potential that Roe v. Wade could soon be overturned.
Experts and political commentators on the Right have suggested that the draft opinion was leaked, most likely by a leftist Supreme Court clerk, in an effort to intimidate the court and change its decision.
The Senate is currently preparing to vote on a bill that would codify Roe v. Wade and massively expand abortions in the United States. The bill, dubbed the Women’s Health Protection Act, is expected to fail.
“This is not an abstract exercise, it’s as real and as urgent as it gets,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said at a Friday news conference, calling the vote one of the “most important” actions “not only this session, but in this century.”
RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel told The Daily Wire on Wednesday morning that “Senate Democrats’ latest failed attempt to impose their radical late-term abortion agenda is another reminder of how extreme and out of touch they are.”
“Americans overwhelmingly support commonsense pro-life protections and limits on abortion, but Democrats are doubling down on taxpayer-funded, unlimited abortion on demand up to the moment of birth,” she said. “Voters will hold Biden and Democrats accountable for being radical, cruel, and anti-science come November.”
RNC polling conducted in February found that only 15% of voters polled said that abortion should be legal for any reason at all points of the pregnancy, while 23% said they think abortion should be legal when the unborn baby is able to survive on its own outside the womb.
“In fact, when describing their own position on the issue of abortion, 85% of voters support abortion limits,” the RNC said in a press release. “This is not a winning issue for Democrats because it would force them to answer the question – is there a single limit to abortion that Democrat candidates will endorse?”
Only 23% of respondents said that a mother should be able to abort her unborn baby if the baby is not the desired gender, according to the poll, and 30% said abortion should be legal after the unborn baby can feel pain at 15 weeks. Meanwhile, 31% said abortions should be permitted when the mother thinks having the baby would “interfere with relationships,” and 35% of voters said the mother should be allowed to abort the baby if that baby would interfere with school or work.
The RNC accompanied the polling with a video, first obtained by The Daily Wire, highlighting Democrats who would not say if they support any limits on abortion. Republicans say that this failure to identify a single abortion restriction indicates that these Democrats support abortion all the way up to birth.
