135th Rose Parade celebrates new year
The Rose Parade: Celebrating a World of Music
The Rose Parade is back for its 135th event, promising a spectacular display of floats, music, and celebration. This year, the parade will be led by the talented singer-actress Audra McDonald, who has been chosen as the grand marshal by the president of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association, Alex Aghajanian.
The grand marshal holds an honorary position and traditionally participates in the coin toss of the Rose Bowl game later in the day. It’s a prestigious role that highlights the individual’s connection to the parade’s theme. And this year’s theme is “Celebrating a World of Music.”
McDonald, a two-time Grammy winner for her opera recording and album, perfectly embodies the spirit of the theme. But she’s not the only musical talent gracing the parade. Joining her are renowned singers Cassadee Pope, Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child, American Idol star David Archuleta, Alexander Star, Straight No Chaser, and Jordin Sparks, who will close the event with a bang.
A World United by Music
“The 2024 theme brings us together through music. In a world of different cultures, beliefs, hopes, and dreams, one language unites us all — music. The sound, texture, rhythm, form, harmony, and expression meld together to move, soothe, excite, and delight the world,” Aghajanian passionately expressed. “From bossa nova to blues, classical to country, metal to mariachi, and rock to rap, thousands of genres invite us to become one in celebrating a world of music. Whether near or far, young or old, we invite you to yearlong festivities that culminate on New Year’s Day at the Rose Parade.”
The Rose Parade is not just a one-day event. It’s a yearlong celebration that culminates on New Year’s Day. The parade route spans 5 1/2 miles, with road closures along Colorado Boulevard, from Orange Grove Boulevard to Sierra Madre Boulevard, and northbound on Sierra Madre to Paloma St. These closures begin at 10 p.m. on Sunday and last until 2 p.m. on Monday, just before the highly anticipated Rose Bowl game, now in its 110th edition.
The Rose Bowl game holds immense significance as the winner between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Michigan Wolverines will advance to the national championship game in Houston on January 8.
