Roseanne discusses her return after cancel culture: ‘I felt like they wanted me dead.’
Roseanne Barr: My Struggle with Cancel Culture
Following the cancellation of her sitcom reboot, Roseanne Barr revealed that she had concerns for her safety. In 2018, Barr faced criticism for a racist tweet about former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett, resulting in the cancellation of her show by ABC.
The Fallout
“They just tried to kill me, and I felt like they killed my character,” Barr told The Megyn Kelly Show. She also recounted how her co-star, Sara Gilbert, repeatedly spoke out against her, even though Gilbert had previously promised to have her back.
Cancel Culture and Free Speech
Barr has since vowed to protect free speech and save comedy from cancel culture. She appeared in her comedy special, Cancel This!, which aired on Fox Nation in February. “I think comedy is a big part of the target because comedy’s so powerful,” Barr said. “The fact that we can laugh at them really upsets them, and they want to put an end to that.”
My Take
Cancel culture reveals one’s true friends, and Barr believes she is better off without those who turned against her. She is now using her platform to fight for free speech and the power of comedy.
