Rubio Demands Investigation Into Reported ActBlue Donor Fraud
Republican Senator Marco Rubio of Florida has demanded an investigation into ActBlue, a Democratic campaign fundraiser, after reports emerged that it collected donations in the names of elderly Americans without their knowledge, constituting fraudulent activity.
Fox News reported that Rubio has asked the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to probe into the fundraising firm and to mandate credit card CVV codes from contributors to prevent fraud.
Rubio wrote in a letter to the FEC, “It should come as no surprise that ActBlue serves as [a] vessel for fraud, considering the intentional lack of security engrained within their donation processes and systems.”
The Senator expressed concern about “thousands of dollars in political donations” listed under names and addresses of Americans who claim no knowledge of having donated.
Rubio continued, “In knowing that foreign actors use fake accounts to exploit donation systems that do not have robust verification processes and systems in place, most individual campaigns and political action committees (PACs) require CVV numbers as part of making an online donation.”
“However, in breaking with most organizations, ActBlue does not require CVV numbers as a requirement for donating, and thus lending itself as a facilitator of fraud.”
Last week, ActBlue cut 17% of its workforce to reduce costs which resulted in criticism from their labor union.
The union stated, “Prioritizing executive profit over rank and file workers’ livelihoods does not live up to [ActBlue’s] progressive values.”
