Medvedev warns of nuclear retaliation if Ukraine counteroffensive succeeds.
Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev Threatens Nuclear Attack
Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who has previously threatened the use of a nuclear attack, made a shocking statement on Sunday. He warned that Moscow would have no choice but to launch a nuclear weapon if Kyiv’s counteroffensive is successful.
Medvedev, who is deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, took to X, the popular social media platform, to express his concerns. He suggested that if Ukraine were to reclaim territory currently under Russian occupation, Moscow may be forced to resort to nuclear weapons.
“Just imagine that the NATO-supported ukrobanderovtsy’s offensive turned out successful, and they took away a part of our land,” Medvedev posted. “Then we would have to … use the nuclear weapon. There would simply be no other way out. That’s why our enemies must worship our warriors. They are keeping global nuclear fire from flaring up.”
Russia’s nuclear doctrine states that nuclear weapons can be used in response to aggression against Russia, particularly if conventional weapons pose a threat to the country’s existence.
Medvedev has a history of issuing threatening comments throughout the war. He previously called for an “inhumane” response following a Ukrainian attack on the Kerch Bridge in Crimea and the assassination of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
These recent remarks from Medvedev come in the midst of a more forceful counterattack from Ukrainian forces. After preserving some capabilities and weapons, they have now unleashed their strength. Additionally, Russia has reported thwarting several strikes and attacks within their own territory, which they attribute to Ukraine. This highlights a potential escalation in the conflict.
Ukrainian President Zelensky also weighed in on the situation, stating, “Ukraine is getting stronger. Gradually, the war is returning to the territory of Russia — to its symbolic centers and military bases, and this is an inevitable, natural, and absolutely fair process.”
