The armorer for the film Rust has been sentenced to 18 months in prison, about two and a half years after a fatal shooting occurred on the film’s set.
Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, 27, had “repeatedly” failed to maintain proper firearm safety, which led to the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, 42, prosecutors claimed in the case. The 2021 shooting occurred when actor Alec Baldwin was holding a .45 Colt caliber F.lli Pietta single-action revolver during a rehearsal on set when the gun fired and hit Hutchins in the chest.
“You alone turned a safe weapon into a lethal weapon,” Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer said.
Prior to her sentencing, Gutierrez-Reed’s defense contended that their client was a “convenient scapegoat” in this shooting, and asked for her to be given probation. Her attorneys also cited her “complete lack of prior criminal history” and “relative youth.”
A friend of Hutchins had testified in the trial, telling the court that the cinematographer was “a force” who inspired her. She asked for the court to impose the maximum sentencing on Gutierrez-Reed, as she “needs to be held accountable.”
The director of Rust, Joel Souza, also praised Hutchins for having “a talent for life.” Souza had been injured when the gun that killed Hutchins was fired.
While Gutierrez-Reed has been sentenced, Baldwin still awaits his fate for involuntary manslaughter related to the shooting. Jury selection for the trial will begin on July 9, with the trial commencing the next day.

Baldwin has maintained that he had no knowledge that the gun he was holding carried live ammunition.
Special prosecutors had originally charged Baldwin with two counts of involuntary manslaughter but dropped them in April 2023, citing new evidence that had complicated the investigation. Baldwin was then indicted in January on a charge of involuntary manslaughter. He has pleaded not guilty.
