Sage Steele tells Newsom ‘do something right’ and back Trump transgender sports ban
Ex-ESPN anchor Sage Steele called on Gov. Gavin Newsom to “fall in line” and leave transgender athletes out of women’s sports as the NCAA committed to do.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order this week on women’s sports in an effort to keep biological men out of female leagues. California has already vowed to disobey the order and allow transgender athletes to play in women’s sports. Steele implied she expected this reaction from California while on Fox News’s One Nation with Brian Kilmeade on Saturday.

“I believe that if institutions like that NCAA are doing it, then you hope the states will eventually fall in line as well because, at the end of the day, it isn’t about anyone’s ego. This is about women and girls, and safety, and making sure that they are safe while playing sports. It is so simple,” Steele said. “Shame on California. Let’s see if Gov. Newsom decides to do something right, but I’m not holding my breath.”
Steele was invited to the White House to watch the president sign the order as a former sports commentator. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) was also in Washington, D.C., that day, meeting with Trump about wildfire aid to Los Angeles. Newsom has yet to comment publicly on the executive order, but signed a bill into law last year that prohibited schools from outing their students as transgender to their parents.
The California Interscholastic Federation, which governs high school sports, clarified that participating in California sports is not limited by gender identity. It does not keep data on how many transgender students are in the state school system.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta has also defied Trump’s executive order that outlined the U.S. “will not fund, sponsor, promote, assist, or support the so-called ‘transition’ of a child from one sex to another, and it will rigorously enforce all laws that prohibit or limit these destructive and life-altering procedures.” According to Bonta, medical transgender procedures will continue in the state.
