Hitmaker asked to abort for career, but having daughter was best thing.
Salt-N-Peppa Hitmaker Cheryl ‘Salt’ James Reveals Pressure to Get Abortion Early in Career
Cheryl ‘Salt’ James, one half of the iconic female rap duo Salt-N-Peppa, recently appeared on “The Tamron Hall Show” and shared a powerful message about motherhood and career success. The 57-year-old singer revealed that early in her career, she was pressured to get an abortion. However, she chose to have her daughter and called it the “best thing” she ever experienced next to finding Jesus.
Breaking Stereotypes
During the show, James and her singing partner Sandra ‘Pepa’ Denton debunked the myth that women can’t be moms and balance a successful career. They both managed to do so and encouraged other women to follow their dreams.
“We said, ‘We can do it’ and whatever came my way, I handled it, which was taking the good with the bad … ’cause someone has to do it!”
James admitted that the record label people did get scared and even asked her to have an abortion. However, she stood her ground and proved that it’s possible to have a successful career and be a mom.
Best Thing Ever
“Having my daughter, besides finding Jesus, is the best thing that I’ve ever experienced, my kids,” Cheryl continued. “Like, I needed that lil’ baby in my life, you know? She kept me company on the road.”
James shares two kids with ex-husband Gavin Wray. Denton has a daughter with ex-husband Anthony Criss. She also has a son from a previous relationship.
Breaking More Stereotypes
Other celebrities like pop singer Pink have also faced similar stereotypes. She was told that having kids would ruin her chances of reaching fame. However, Pink proved them wrong and said that having a child softened her and helped her understand herself and the world better.
Pink is married to husband Carey Hart and they share two kids together.
Conclusion
James and Denton’s message is clear: women can be moms and have a successful career. It’s time to break the stereotypes and encourage women to follow their dreams, no matter what.
