Samuel L. Jackson Reveals Upcoming Disney+ “Secret Invasion” Series Has “A Political Aspect That Kind of Fits Into Where We Are Now”
Actor Samuel L. Jackson, who plays Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, recently spoke about the upcoming Disney+ series Secret Invasion. He revealed that the series has “a political aspect that kind of fits into where we are now.”
Jackson elaborated on the show’s premise in an exclusive interview with Vanity Fair, stating that “We don’t know who’s a friend, who’s the enemy.” He explained, “There’s a political aspect that kind of fits into where we are right now: Who’s okay? Who’s not? What happens when people get afraid and don’t understand other people? You can’t tell who’s innocent and who’s guilty in this particular instance.”

It appears that relations between Fury and the Skrulls have deteriorated since their alliance in Captain Marvel. However, in Spider-Man: Far From Home the Skrulls Talos and Soren pretended to be Fury and Maria Hill while Fury appeared to be elsewhere in space. Jackson explained, “He told the Skrulls they were trying to find them a place to live. He promised them they were going to find them a planet or somewhere they could be. And that’s not going so well.”
In the upcoming series, a group of Skrull extremists led by Kingsley Ben-Adir’s Gravik has decided to take matters into their own hands and claim the land and resources they were promised through subterfuge and force. Actor Ben Mendelsohn, who reprises his role as Talos, commented on the show’s relation to the real world, “I think any time that you get cultures that have significant tensions between groups of people, then you can find a corollary.”
Emilia Clarke’s character is a Skrull named G’iah who is revealed to be Talos’ daughter. Clarke described her character as a refugee kid who has had Talos as her father, which explains their strained relationship. Speaking about her character, Clarke said, “There’s a kind of punk feeling that you get from this girl.”
The series is said to be inspired by shows like Homeland and The Americans and draws on the themes of trust and double-crossing. The show’s Executive Producer Jonathan Schwartz revealed, “What you find is there are people that you trust or you think you can trust—or you can only trust to a certain point.”
No premiere date has been announced for the show on Disney+ yet.
