Retail crime and shoplifting in San Francisco have reached alarming levels, prompting stores to implement drastic security measures. In a recent tweet, images of a Walgreens location revealed that frozen food products are now locked in chained coolers, requiring staff assistance for access.
“Workers said normally shoplifters clean out all the pizza and ice cream every night. They’re usually hit 20x a day,” the tweet read. ”The whole store is virtually locked up.”
The accompanying video showcased the entire frozen food section padlocked, while other items like cosmetics and snacks were visible behind plastic barriers. This situation was not unique to Walgreens, as a similar scenario was captured in a tweet featuring a San Francisco CVS.
Shoppers and employees have expressed frustration with these heightened security measures. One Safeway employee even stated their intention to quit due to the constant stress of unlocking and transporting products.
“It’s just too much,” said David MacDowell, the employee. “Having to bring things to the front was a game changer. Every day, it’s like this.”
Despite the inconvenience, stores are determined to protect their merchandise and combat the rising tide of retail crime in San Francisco.
