San Francisco Mayor Slams “Homeless Coalition” as Court Blocks City’s Efforts
San Francisco Mayor London Breed did not hold back her frustration as she criticized the “homeless coalition” outside the United States 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. The court had recently issued an order preventing the city from clearing homeless encampments, much to the dismay of the mayor and a large crowd gathered in support.
Breed, who leads a city grappling with a severe homelessness crisis, highlighted the city’s ongoing efforts to assist the homeless population. However, she firmly stated that the “homeless coalition” was holding the city “hostage.”
“The homeless coalition has held San Francisco hostage for decades. It is time for their reign to end,” Breed declared.
The mayor also emphasized the inhumane conditions within the encampments, with used needles, rotting food, and human waste scattered throughout. She argued that allowing these camps to persist was unacceptable.
However, advocates for the homeless countered that removing the encampments would be equally inhumane, given that the number of unhoused individuals far exceeds the available shelter beds.
“There are 3,000 shelter beds in the city for 7,000 or more unhoused people who are sleeping outside every night because they have no choice in the matter,” said Zal Shroff, interim legal director at the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area.
As the debate rages on, the city of San Francisco continues to grapple with finding a solution to its homelessness crisis.
