San Francisco Reparations Committee Member Recommends $500 Million Payment Per Person
Friday’s proposal by a member of San Francisco’s race reparations taskforce was that $500 million be paid per person to black residents. This is 100 times more than what his committee had originally suggested.
“As a member of that advisory committee in San Francisco, people keep asking us, ‘Why $5 million?'” At a Friday meeting, Daniel Landry, the policy lead for the city’s African American Reparations Advisory Committee said.
“Well, why not $500 million?” Landry asked. “Because you can never repay the damage that’s been done to black people in America.”
Late last year, San Francisco’s reparations commission proposed that the city pay $5 million in damages to nearly every black resident who is over 18 and can prove their residency. The city should also fund universal debt clearing and free therapy for all black residents. There will also be 250 years of $97,000 annually for low-income black residents.
This plan sparked fresh opposition this week, when Eric McDonnell, chairman of the reparations taskforce, was criticized. acknowledged To the Washington Post The $5 million was not based in any hard data.
“There wasn’t a math formula,” McDonnell spoke to the Post. “It was a journey for the committee towards what could represent a significant enough investment in families to put them on this path to economic well-being, growth, and vitality that chattel slavery and all the policies that flowed from it destroyed.”
Landry suggested Friday that California’s government give land to black Californians. He said he was seeking a “deep dive into the land issue” Argumenting that California prohibited blacks from owning real property.
“Racism, ignorance, stupidity is a way of life here in America,” He stated. “So I want to be very clear: land, land, land.”
Landry’s comment is yet another sign that California Democrats have become increasingly complex in their reparations quest. At the height of Black Lives Matter protests, in 2020, Sacramento and San Francisco lawmakers established task forces. Both committees must present legislation by this summer.
At Friday’s meeting, several public commentators expressed dissatisfaction at the delay of the panel in conceiving a plan to pay cash.
One man attacked the panel’s work. “political theater” “scams” These are not enough to justify the millions they have spent. California’s women are slammed “Scottish governor,” Gavin Newsom (D.), along with other non-black leaders, were wrong to believe they should have final say in reparations negotiations.
“Now when I think about reparations … we got to mobilize it by ourselves,” She said. “This is serious business.”
