Sanders & AOC ‘preaching to the choir’ with oligarchy tour – Washington Examiner

In a discussion on the “Fighting Oligarchy” tour led by Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Salena Zito from the *Washington Examiner* urged caution in interpreting the large turnouts at their events.while thousands have attended rallies in states like Arizona, Colorado, and California, Zito argued that these crowds may not signify widespread opposition to President Donald Trump or indicate a significant shift in voter sentiment. She suggested that attendees primarily consist of those who already support Democratic candidates or who failed to vote in the last election.Zito cautioned against viewing these gatherings as a robust movement, claiming they resemble “preaching to the choir.” Moreover, she briefly commented on sports journalist Stephen A. Smith’s potential presidential ambitions for 2028, relating his remarks to the Democratic Party’s ongoing struggles to connect with voters. As Sanders continues travelling and engaging with audiences, Zito’s insights reflect skepticism about the effectiveness of current Democratic strategies in expanding their support base.

Bernie Sanders & AOC ‘preaching to the choir’ with oligarchy tour: Salena Zito

The Washington Examiner’s Salena Zito encouraged people to be “cautious” in making assumptions about the Fighting Oligarchy tour’s turnout, suggesting it might not indicate how people feel about President Donald Trump and his administration.

The tour, conducted by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), has been conducted in states such as Arizona, Colorado, and California and has drawn in tens of thousands of attendees supporting the lawmakers. However, Zito contended that while the large crowds do give the assumption that people oppose Trump, many of these attendees are also the same people who voted Democrat in November or stayed home on Election Day.

“Instead, it seems as though they’re coming across as preaching to the choir, and while that gives that great impression, right, this grandiose impression, I don’t think that they’re gaining anyone new,” Zito suggested on Fox News’s Fox & Friends First. “Whether they’re going to a blue district or a red district, not every place in a red town voted Republican. A lot of them are Democrats, and so I would just be cautious in trying to portray this as Democrats are as a movement.”

Zito also provided insights into rumblings over sports journalist Stephen A. Smith potentially seeking a presidential run in 2028. Smith stated on Sunday that he has “no choice” but to leave the door open to this possibility. She compared Smith’s comments to Trump’s discontent with the Republican Party that prompted him to run for office in 2015, noting how voters are looking for someone who “reawakens their political party.”

Zito said she believes Smith is “hinting at” how the Democratic Party’s current strategy is “not working” in gaining supporters and that he would take on the challenge of remaking the party if no one else does. Her assessment comes after Smith mentioned several Democrats he felt were more qualified to run for president in 2028, including Govs. Josh Shapiro (D-PA), Wes Moore (D-MD), and former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

THE RESISTANCE 2.0 POWER RANKINGS: APRIL

The rumblings over Smith’s possible 2028 run for office come as the Democratic Party still seeks a proper avenue to oppose Trump and his national agenda. Amid Sanders’s Fighting Oligarchy tour, he attended the Coachella music festival in Southern California, telling attendees they must “stand up to fight for justice” during Clairo’s set.

Ocasio-Cortez is already a recognizable name within the Democratic Party, and rumblings have grown over her potentially seeking a Senate primary run against Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY). When Sanders was asked about this possibility, he said there were “a whole lot of people in the Congress” and attempted to end his sit-down interview.
