Homeless man assaults Santa Monica City Councilman.

City Council Member⁢ Attacked by Homeless Man

 ‍

A Santa Monica city council member was attacked this weekend by a homeless man⁤ who had been released from Los Angeles ⁤County ‍jail ‌twice with felony ⁤charges just⁤ days before the⁤ incident.

‌

Assault on ‍Councilman Phil Brock

Councilman Phil Brock and his girlfriend were ‌assaulted on Sunday‍ by suspect ‍Sawyer⁤ Walden‌ Allee, who threw‌ an unidentified liquid on the couple. Brock ⁤had approached Allee, who ⁤was tearing down‍ signs on a store, to request he throw the signs away and⁣ not litter. Allee then‌ shoved him, shouted‌ obscenities, stole his hat, and ⁣threw ⁢the⁢ liquid.

Allee is charged with battery and grand theft, marking his third felony⁢ arrest⁤ in⁢ less than three weeks.

“I turned ‍to⁤ walk ‌away. He took a bottle of⁤ some sort of⁤ liquid ⁤and threw it on me,” Brock⁣ said. “Made a second throw ‍and doused Kathryn [Brock’s girlfriend] as well. We called 911.”

Brock, who advocates on‍ his‍ campaign ⁤website for⁣ more police and for the enforcement of misdemeanors, ⁣told local outlet KTLA‌ 5 that the city is struggling⁢ with ⁤the‍ homeless problem on⁣ its ‍streets.

California’s Struggle with Homelessness and Crime

The attack is‍ the latest incident‌ highlighting California’s⁣ struggle with homelessness⁤ and crime in its‍ major cities.

Los Angeles ‌County,⁤ despite facing‍ record fentanyl deaths, is ‌handing out crack ‌pipes and needles. Rapper Curtis⁢ “50 Cent” Jackson said this month that L.A. is “finished”⁤ after it reinstated ⁤a zero-bail⁣ policy that ⁣will allow people charged with a non-violent felony to avoid jail. The city saw an 11‌ percent increase‌ in its ⁢crime ⁣rate in 2022.

Homicides in San Francisco ⁢have increased nearly 40 percent from 2020 ⁣to 2022, and deaths from fentanyl have spiked. The city lost more than⁤ 50,000⁤ residents last year, which is the highest ⁢population decrease in any major U.S. city.
