Satanists upset with leader after photo with ‘ex-woke’ atheist.
The Satanic Temple Faces Backlash After Leader Poses with Atheist Critic of “Woke” LGBT Activism
The leader of The Satanic Temple (TST) found himself in hot water when his own followers turned against him after he shared a photo with an atheist who openly criticized “crazy woke” LGBT activism.
Lucien Greaves, co-founder of The Satanic Temple, recently took a picture with atheist activist David Silverman, who describes himself as “ex-Left” and “ex-woke, but still left of center.” Silverman expressed his gratitude for the tour Greaves gave him and another person at The Satanic Temple, praising Greaves for his activism.
Thanks to my friend @LucienGreaves for a great tour for me and Kris @CShellska at @satanic_temple_! Great to see you again and thanks as always for your activism! pic.twitter.com/uCYDI6cUEl

Silverman, known for his skepticism of transgender ideology, often shares posts critical of transitioning children on his social media. In June, he argued that expressing concerns about allowing transgender individuals in women’s showers and protecting children from grooming is not “anti trans.”
The photo of Silverman with Greaves immediately sparked controversy and backlash. Silverman explained that people hated on him without understanding the context, simply because he was an outsider with differing opinions. This led to negative assumptions about Greaves for associating with him.
Some members of The Satanic Temple demanded that Greaves apologize, relinquish his power, and publicly support transgender rights. The British faction of the Satanic Temple even voted to leave and rebrand themselves as Satanists in the Wilderness.
Even the U.S. Satanic Temple’s Sober Faction, known for its sobriety programs free from pseudoscience and superstition, disapproved of the photo and eventually split off, denouncing the leadership of TST as patriarchal and white supremacist.
The controversy spilled over onto social media platforms, with one user accusing Greaves of posing with a transphobe and claiming it exposed the true nature of The Satanic Temple.
Greaves responded to the criticism, dismissing it as a “non-story” and emphasizing that his interactions with individuals do not imply agreement with their opinions. He reaffirmed the focus on the work being done within TST to support its members and clarified his disagreement with Tucker Carlson’s worldview.
Silverman also brushed off the criticism, stating that he has been a civil rights activist supporting trans people for 25 years. He expressed his unconditional love for his trans child but admitted to disagreeing with certain aspects of “crazy woke shit.”
Despite its provocative name, The Satanic Temple is actually an atheist group aiming to challenge Christianity’s influence in American society. Last year, they sponsored “After School Satan” clubs as a response to Christian Good News Clubs in public schools across the country.

How can The Satanic Temple address the concerns and disappointment expressed by its members regarding the association with Silverman while still maintaining an inclusive and open environment for diverse opinions and perspectives
This photo and the praise it received from Silverman did not sit well with some members of The Satanic Temple, who expressed their disappointment and anger on social media. Many argued that Silverman’s views on transgender issues and his criticism of “woke” LGBT activism were incompatible with the values and principles of The Satanic Temple.
The Satanic Temple is an organization that advocates for religious freedom and the separation of church and state. They have been involved in various legal battles, including challenging the placement of religious monuments on public property. They promote the idea of Satan as a symbol of rebellion against oppressive authority and champion individual autonomy and personal freedom.
The backlash against Greaves stems from the perception among some members that by associating with Silverman, the leader of The Satanic Temple was condoning or endorsing views that contradicted the organization’s values and principles. This incident has led to a broader debate within the community about the limits of free expression and the boundaries of activism.
On one hand, there are those who argue that The Satanic Temple should be a platform for diverse opinions and perspectives, even if they are controversial or unpopular. They believe that engaging in dialogue with individuals who hold different views can lead to greater understanding and cooperation.
On the other hand, there are those who believe that The Satanic Temple should be more selective in its associations and align strictly with individuals and groups that share their core values and principles. They argue that by associating with someone who criticizes and undermines the goals of the LGBT community, The Satanic Temple risks alienating its own members and undermining its credibility as an advocate for social justice.
The controversy surrounding this photo highlights the challenges faced by any organization that seeks to promote inclusivity and diversity while also maintaining a coherent and consistent ideological position. It also raises important questions about the intersection of free speech, activism, and personal beliefs within the context of a collective movement.
The Satanic Temple has not officially responded to the backlash or addressed the concerns raised by its members. However, this incident serves as a reminder that even within seemingly like-minded communities, there can be significant differences of opinion and interpretation. As the organization continues to navigate these challenges, it will need to find a balance between remaining true to its principles and fostering an inclusive and open environment for its members.
