Scalise’s challenge: Persuading House GOP to back his Speaker bid.
Several GOP Lawmakers Raise Objections to Steve Scalise as Next Speaker of the House
During a closed-door vote on Wednesday, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) secured the nomination for the next Speaker of the House. However, this decision has faced opposition from several Republican lawmakers.
The nomination of Scalise over Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, who had announced his bid for the position last week, was voted on by House Republicans. The vote resulted in a 113-99 victory for Scalise. Former Speaker Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) expressed his support for Scalise and stated that he was not involved in influencing other lawmakers’ opposition to him.
Scalise now needs to secure 217 votes on the floor. However, he currently lacks support from a critical bloc of Republicans who mostly favored Jordan, especially after receiving former President Donald Trump’s endorsement.
One of the lawmakers holding out on supporting Scalise is Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO), who publicly committed to voting for Jim Jordan. Boebert expressed concerns about the leadership in their conference and the way things are run in the House.
Other members of the Freedom Caucus, including Reps. Bob Good, Barry Moore, Michael Cloud, and Chip Roy, remain undecided on their support for Scalise.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) stated that despite Jordan’s request to shift their vote towards Scalise, the Freedom Caucus members would still support Jordan for the speakership. Greene also voiced concerns about Scalise’s health, as he is currently battling blood cancer.
Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina revealed that she would not support Scalise due to his past involvement with a white supremacist group founded by former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard David Duke in 2002. Scalise has since expressed regret for his association with the organization and rejected its racist ideology.
Despite the opposition, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna of Florida expressed her confidence in supporting Scalise as the Speaker nominee, stating that he would allow her to pursue justice for the country.
The speaker vote was not held on Wednesday evening, and the House lawmakers were informed that they would reconvene on Thursday around noon to continue the process.

How could Ed Scalise’s ties to former President Donald Trump impact his ability to work with Democrats and bridge the partisan divide as Speaker of the House?
Ed on by House Republicans. Scalise, who has served as the House Majority Whip since 2014, is viewed by many as a strong candidate for the position due to his experience and leadership skills. However, some GOP lawmakers have expressed concerns about Scalise’s ability to unite the party and effectively lead as Speaker of the House.
One of the main objections raised by these lawmakers is Scalise’s ties to former President Donald Trump. While Scalise is known for being a loyal supporter of Trump, some Republicans worry that this could hinder his ability to work with Democrats and bridge the partisan divide. They argue that the next Speaker of the House should be someone who can foster bipartisanship and find common ground with both sides of the aisle.
Another concern raised by these lawmakers is Scalise’s conservative stance on key issues. While many Republicans appreciate his conservative values, some worry that this could alienate moderate members of the party and impede their ability to pass legislation. They believe that a more moderate Speaker would be better able to build coalitions and advance the Republican agenda.
Furthermore, there are some lawmakers who believe that it is time for a change in leadership. Scalise has been in a leadership position in the House for several years, and some Republicans argue that fresh leadership is needed to bring new ideas and approaches to the table. They argue that a new Speaker would be better positioned to navigate the challenges facing Congress and bring about meaningful change.
Despite these objections, Scalise still has a strong base of support from within the party. Many Republicans believe that his experience, conservative principles, and loyalty to the party make him an ideal candidate for Speaker of the House. They argue that Scalise has proven himself as a effective leader and would be able to rally the Republican caucus behind him.
In the coming weeks, House Republicans will vote on the Speaker of the House nominee in a public vote. It remains to be seen whether these objections will have any impact on the final outcome. The decision on who will lead the House of Representatives will have far-reaching implications for the future of the Republican party and the effectiveness of Congress as a whole. It is crucial that Republicans carefully consider the concerns raised by their colleagues and choose a Speaker who can effectively lead and unite the party.
