Schiff foresees government shutdown while McCarthy strives for speakership.

Rep. Adam Schiff Predicts Government Shutdown

According⁣ to Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), the United States federal government ‌is at risk of ‍shutting down next month due to GOP hardliners.⁣ House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is facing a similar situation, where ‌the House Freedom Caucus holds significant power. ⁣McCarthy has urged his colleagues to support a short-term spending deal to avoid a shutdown on Oct. 1.

Concerns Raised by Schiff

“I fear that we are on a path to government⁤ shutdown because there are enough members of the Republican conference who want it and Kevin McCarthy will do ⁤whatever it takes to remain speaker one more day or one more week. That’s his sole motivation,”

During an interview with ‍former Biden ⁢White House press secretary Jen‍ Psaki on MSNBC’s Inside with Jen Psaki,⁣ Schiff expressed‌ his concerns about McCarthy’s‍ motivations.

Tight Timeline for⁣ Resolution

The Senate and the House will reconvene after their August recess, leaving lawmakers with limited time to resolve differences ⁢over funding the government. They must work together to pass a short-term spending bill that would postpone the fight until ‍early December.

Impeachment Inquiry Threat

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene ‌(R-GA) has stated that she would vote against funding the government unless the House of Representatives opens an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden. Despite support within the party for such a ⁤move, McCarthy has chosen to hold off for now.

“To open an impeachment inquiry ‌is a serious matter, and ⁤House⁣ Republicans⁣ would not take it lightly or use it for political purposes. The American people deserve ⁢to be heard on this matter through their elected representatives,”

McCarthy emphasized the seriousness of an impeachment inquiry ‍and stated that it should occur through a vote on the floor of the House, rather than a unilateral declaration.
