School District Provides Race-Based Classes to Reduce Learning Gap
To merely exist as a white person today is to hold black people and Latino people down.
According to liberals and progressives, being white automatically contributes to the educational inequality in our nation. They want everyone to believe that whiteness is the primary cause.
The Fallacy of Segregation in Education
Evanston Township High School in Illinois is taking a misguided approach to address the learning gap between black, Latino, and white students. They are reintroducing segregation into the school system through new classes aimed at shrinking the gap, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.

The school officials blame the existence of whiteness for the achievement gap. They believe that white students are a distraction to black and Latino students, and therefore, these students need to be excluded in order for the others to perform better. To bypass legal issues, they have made these classes optional, claiming it doesn’t violate antidiscrimination laws.
Affinity Classes: A Band-Aid Solution
These classes, known as affinity classes, separate white students from black and Latino students. Around 200 black and Latino students have voluntarily signed up for math classes and a writing seminar taught by teachers of color. However, this approach is merely a band-aid solution that avoids addressing the root causes of underperformance among black and Latino students.
Black and Latino parents and students should be outraged by this situation. Instead of preparing these children to thrive in the real world, they are being excused from reality and denied the opportunity to overcome challenges in a safe environment. This approach only perpetuates the division between races and hinders true progress.
The Need for Real Solutions
Instead of focusing on color, we need to address the significant factors that contribute to academic underperformance, such as the impact of fatherlessness in black homes. The administration’s emphasis on “whiteness” as the reason for the achievement gap is a politically driven approach that falls short of providing meaningful solutions.
While it is important to create a comfortable learning environment, we must also consider the long-term reality these students will face. They need to be equipped to thrive in the actual conditions they will encounter outside of the classroom.
Seeking True Progress
The district’s superintendent and school board believe that concentrating on equity is the winning strategy. However, focusing solely on race is not the proper path to true progress. We need to address multiple elements and measure progress accordingly.
The lack of transparency surrounding these classes raises questions. Educating the public about what is happening in the school system could benefit all cultures eager to learn and grow. If there is nothing nefarious going on, there should be no need for secrecy.
The ultimate goal should be reunification based on increased achievement and the elimination of disparities between races. However, the current approach feels like a step backward, reminiscent of a time when prejudice and segregation were the norm. We have come too far to allow this regression to happen.

By isolating students based on race, the school is sending the message that they are not capable of succeeding in integrated settings. This is a disservice to the very students they claim to be helping.
The Danger of Blaming Whiteness
The belief that whiteness is the root cause of educational inequality is not only misguided, but it also perpetuates a dangerous narrative. It absolves individuals of personal responsibility and places the blame on an entire race without considering the complexities of societal issues.
While it is true that historical racial discrimination has contributed to systemic inequalities, blaming all white people for the struggles faced by black and Latino individuals today is neither fair nor productive. It ignores the progress that has been made and the efforts of many individuals, both white and non-white, to create a more equitable society.
A Path Towards True Equality
If we truly want to address educational inequality, we must focus on addressing the underlying issues that lead to disparities in academic achievement. This includes providing equal funding and resources to schools in underserved communities, implementing evidence-based instructional strategies, and promoting a culture of high expectations for all students.
We must also tackle the social and economic factors that affect educational outcomes, such as poverty, lack of access to healthcare, and unstable home environments. By taking a comprehensive approach, we can begin to bridge the achievement gap and create a more equitable education system for all students, regardless of race or ethnicity.
