Schumer dodges when asked who’s leading the Democratic Party
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) declined to say Sunday who the new leader of the Democratic Party is following Vice President Kamala Harris‘s electoral loss to President-elect Donald Trump.
Schumer joined NBC News’s Meet the Press on Sunday for the show’s first broadcast of 2025, where he denied that Democrats misled the public about President Joe Biden‘s health but claimed that the party should have shown more “empathy” to voters regarding their economic concerns heading into the November election.
HERE’S WHICH BIDEN EXECUTIVE ORDERS WILL BE THE FIRST TO GO UNDER TRUMP
The senator would not answer a question from host Kristen Welker about whether he should be viewed as the party’s de facto leader once Biden leaves office on January 20.
“Look, I think we have a lot of great leaders in our party. We have a great bench of people coming up, and I am really optimistic about the future of the Democratic Party,” he told Welker.
Schumer did say that Democrats must make “certain adjustments” to reconnect with voters moving forward.
“I think people are going to realize that the Democratic Party is the party of working families, of working people; we’re doing more for them. We’re going to show them that some of these Republican things like tax cuts for the very wealthy individuals, which … they did it in 2017 and they lost the election in 2018 — they haven’t learned,” he argued. “But we’re going to hold their feet to the fire when they do things that hurt working people. We’re going to stand with the working families of America, and that’s going to bode very well for us.”
Democrats are in the midst of a major leadership turnover, with Biden, Harris, and Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison all heading for the exits later this week.
The DNC will hold an election to replace Harrison later this month. Schumer has endorsed Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Ben Wikler in that race.
Both Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) will remain in their current leadership positions, though Schumer switched from majority to minority leader when the new Congress was sworn in on Friday.
