Schwarzenegger On His Father Being A Nazi: Was ‘Sucked Into A Hate System Through Lies And Deceits’
Arnold Schwarzenegger Reflects on Auschwitz Visit and Father’s Nazi Involvement
During a recent interview, former California Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger opened up about his visit to Auschwitz and the impact it had on him. He described the experience as a “real mind-blower” and emphasized the importance of the slogan “Never again” in preventing such atrocities from happening in the future.
Seeing the Reality of Auschwitz
“It’s always one thing when you hear about it, when you read about it, but it’s never the same as when you’re actually there,” Schwarzenegger told CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union.” He went on to describe the rooms filled with suitcases and belongings of those who were told to remember where they put them, only to never return from the gas chambers.
The impact of seeing these things firsthand, Schwarzenegger said, is profound and reinforces the importance of never forgetting the lessons of the past.
Confronting His Father’s Nazi Past
Schwarzenegger also addressed the fact that his father, Gustav Schwarzenegger, was involved with the Nazi Party and fought for the Nazis during World War II. He acknowledged that this was not something that was discussed when he was growing up and that he learned about the history of the war in America.
However, he also emphasized that his father, like many others, was “sucked into a hate system through lies and deceit.” Schwarzenegger believes that love is more powerful than hate and that we must strive to get along and prevent such hate systems from taking hold in the future.
