Helmuth made a series of posts on Bluesky — a rival platform to X — in which she said Trump supporters were “f******” fascists.” The posts have since been deleted, but they were shared to X.

“Solidarity to everybody whose meanest, dumbest, most bigoted high-school classmates are celebrating early results because f*** them to the moon and back,” Hemuth wrote on Nov. 5

After nearly four and a half years as editor-in-chief, Helmuth resigned on Thursday.

“I’m going to take some time to think about what comes next (and go birdwatching),” Helmuth wrote.

Before announcing her resignation, Helmuth tried to backtrack on her comments and separate them from her publication.

“I respect and value people across the political spectrum,” Helmuth wrote. “These posts, which I have deleted, do not reflect my beliefs; they were a mistaken expression of shock and confusion about the election results.”

This election cycle, Scientific American endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president — making it the second time in the publication’s 179-year running of endorsing a presidential candidate.

Magazine president Kimberly Lau said Helmuth decided to resign on her own.

“We thank Laura for her four years leading Scientific American during which time the magazine won major science communications awards and saw the establishment of a reimagined digital newsroom,” Lau said in a statement to the Washington Post. “We wish her well for the future.”
