Egyptian officials in antiquities announced Thursday that a new passage has been found in the Great Pyramid Of Giza.
The passage was found behind the pyramid’s entrance and measured to be nine metres long (approximately 30-feet). Officials believe that further discoveries could be made inside the pyramid after the passage was discovered.
The discovery was made by Zahi Hawaa, an Egyptian archaeologist, and Ahmed Eissa, the Minister of Tourism. It was announced during a ceremony outside the pyramid.
The discovery was made in the Pyramid of Khufu. It was named after its builder who was a pharaoh who ruled between 2509 and 2483 B.C.
It is one of the Great Pyramids of Giza that makes up the Great Pyramids of Giza. This is the only of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World that has survived to this day.
Under the Scan Pyramids project, the discovery was made in the 4,500-year old pyramid. Scan Pyramids is an international program that scans the pyramids for unexplored areas. Since 2015, the project has used infrared temperaturegraphy, 3D simulations and cosmic-ray imaging in order to cause the least disturbances possible while digging deeper into the pyramid.
Experts are still unsure how the pyramids were built. This passage is a great source of interest in the hope that they can provide answers.
Christian Grosse, Professor of Nondestructive Testing at Technical University of Munich, is a key member of the Scan pyramids project. To find the passage, he said that a variety of scanning techniques were used, including ground penetrating radars and ultrasound. Images were then taken by inserting a 6mm thick endoscope into a joint between the stones.
Grosse hopes that finding the passage can lead to more discoveries inside the pyramid. There is a chamber at one end of the passage that is blocked with limestones.
‘’There are two large limestones at the end chamber, and now the question is what’s behind these stones and below the chamber,” Grosse said.
Mostafa Wajiri, head of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities said that the purpose of the passage wasn’t immediately clear. But, he said that the passage was likely to distribute the pyramid’s burden around the main entrance or another chamber or space that has yet been discovered.
“We’re going to continue our scanning so we will see what we can do, to figure out what we can find out beneath it, or just by the end of this corridor,” Waziri said.
Five rooms above the main chamber in another section, which is located at the top of the pyramid, are believed to have been used to help distribute the weight. Waziri also stated that it was likely that more than one burial chamber had been built by the pharaoh.
Officials at Scan Pyramids had discovered an earlier version of a 2017 a prior to 2017. “void” At least 30 meters in length (approximately 100 ft) inside the Great Pyramid. This was the first major structure to be discovered within the pyramids since 1912.Th century.
Officials are quick to announce new discoveries in an effort to attract more tourists to Egypt, which is a major source for income. Since 2011, when President Hosni Murad had been ousted, the tourism industry hasn’t been as profitable. The coronavirus of 2020 further damaged the country’s tourism sector.
The Pyramid of Khufu was the largest and oldest pyramid in Giza’s plans. It was approximately 480 feet tall at its height when it was built. This made it the tallest constructed manmade structure until 1889’s construction of the Eiffel tower. But, now the pyramid stands at 139m (456 feet).
