Scotland’s First Minister Humza Yousaf has announced that the country is opening its doors to refugees from Gaza amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Yousaf made the announcement on Wednesday, expressing Scotland’s readiness to provide asylum to those displaced by the conflict in Gaza.
In a tweet, he emphasized Scotland’s willingness to be a sanctuary for those in need, stating, “Scotland is willing to be a place of sanctuary and be the first country to take those refugees.”
“The people of Gaza are a proud people. Many don’t want to leave, and shouldn’t have to. But for those displaced, who want to leave, there should be a worldwide refugee scheme. Scotland is willing to be a place of sanctuary and be the first country to take those refugees,” he said.
Yousaf also called on countries in the Middle East, Asia, Europe, the United Kingdom, and the U.S. to welcome refugees from Gaza.
“Let’s say that Scotland will be a place of sanctuary for them as we have shown kindness and compassion for others. Let us show it once again and this time for the people of Gaza,” Yousaf said. “And Scotland is willing to be the first country in the U.K. to take those refugees.”
In a video message, Yousaf mentioned that Scotland’s hospitals are prepared to provide care for those injured in the war in Gaza.
He also urged the U.K. government to initiate the creation of a refugee resettlement scheme for those in Gaza who wish to leave.
Yousaf revealed that he has relatives stranded in Gaza and expressed Scotland’s willingness to welcome Palestinian refugees.
While acknowledging Israel’s right to self-defense, Yousaf criticized the infliction of collective punishment in Gaza, which is deemed illegal under international law.
