Scott: US Military Must Prepare for Conflict Across Three Continents
Republican Candidate Calls for Stronger Military
ATLANTA—Republican presidential candidate Sen. Tim Scott (S.C.) made a compelling case for increasing military spending on Friday. According to Scott, it is crucial for the U.S. military to be prepared for simultaneous conflicts with Russia, Iran, and China.
“If we cannot engage in conflict on three different continents at the exact same time, our military isn’t prepared,” said Scott during his speech at the Gathering, a conference hosted by conservative commentator Erick Erickson in Atlanta.
Isolationist Trend Among Republican Candidates
Scott’s remarks come at a time when many Republican candidates are leaning towards isolationism. For instance, Vivek Ramaswamy has campaigned on ending aid to Ukraine, while Florida governor Ron DeSantis has expressed doubts about the United States’ involvement in the European conflict.
Preparing for Conflict in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia
Scott emphasized the importance of being prepared for conflict in different regions. He highlighted the need to address Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which poses a threat to NATO allies in Europe. Additionally, he mentioned Iran’s nuclear ambitions as an existential threat to Israel in the Middle East, and China’s aggression towards Taiwan in Asia.
“We have to be loyal to our allies and lethal to our adversaries,” Scott emphasized.
Scott also criticized President Joe Biden for failing to explain America’s “vital interest in Ukraine.” He argued that the Russian military should be degraded before any invasion of NATO allies occurs, without putting U.S. soldiers on the ground.
Investing in Advanced Weapons and Assets
As a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Scott stressed the need for the United States to enhance its development of hypersonic weapons and other assets to effectively compete with Russia and China.
