The Naval Special Warfare (NSW) Command is taking action against the alleged widespread use of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) within the Navy’s special warfare community. Rear Adm. Keith Davids, the commander of NSW, has announced that the command will begin conducting random urinalysis testing on its personnel starting in November.
“My intent is to ensure every NSW teammate operates at their innate best while preserving the distinguished standards of excellence that define NSW,” Rear Adm. Davids said in a press statement.

New Testing Regime Follows SEAL Training Death
The decision to implement random drug testing comes after the investigation into the tragic death of 24-year-old SEAL candidate Kyle Mullen during his Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL course. The investigation revealed the presence of pills marked as sildenafil, testosterone, and human growth hormone in Mr. Mullen’s car. While these substances were not the cause of his death, the investigation found “strong indicators” of PED use among other members of Mr. Mullen’s class.
Using PEDs in the special operations community poses significant health risks, including low blood pressure, cardiovascular collapse, kidney and liver dysfunction, strokes, heart attacks, blood clots, high blood pressure, mood swings, and the risk of contracting HIV or hepatitis from non-sterile needle use. Additionally, PED use goes against the SEAL ethos and the Navy’s core values.
The May investigative report recommended expanded PED screening and other safety measures within the Naval Special Warfare training pipelines. Rear Adm. Davids emphasized the importance of honoring Seaman Mullen’s memory by improving the training program for future Navy SEALs.
