Tragedy Strikes New York City Day Care: 1-Year-Old Dead, 3 Others Sickened by Opioids
The owner of a New York City day care center and a tenant living in the building were arrested Saturday after a devastating incident. A 1-year-old boy tragically lost his life, and three other young children fell ill due to what officials suspect was exposure to opioids.
The arrests came just one day after authorities made a shocking discovery. Four young children, aged between 8 months and 2 years old, showed signs of a suspected opioid overdose after spending time at the Bronx day care center, Divino Niño.
Nicholas Dominici, the 1-year-old child, tragically passed away at a local hospital. However, three others were revived after medics administered doses of the overdose-reversing drug Narcan, according to authorities.

On Saturday evening, the police took action and arrested the owner of the facility, Grei Mendez, 36, along with a tenant named Carlisto Acevedo Brito, 41. They now face charges of depraved indifference murder, assault, and criminal possession of narcotics, including Fentanyl.
The arraignment of Mendez and Brito is scheduled for Sunday.
The cause of Dominici’s death is currently under investigation by the city’s medical examiner.
During the execution of a search warrant at the day care center, which is a home-based operation in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx, the police discovered a kilo press—a device used for packaging large quantities of drugs.
Nicholas’ parents, Zoila Dominici and Otoniel Feliz, expressed their grief, revealing that their young child had only started attending the center a week ago. They described him as intelligent and full of love, cherished by everyone who knew him.
New York City, like many other places in the country, has been grappling with a surge in opioid-related deaths. Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that can be over 50 times stronger than heroin, is now responsible for the majority of fatalities.
During a press conference on Saturday, Mayor Eric Adams emphasized that Dominici’s death highlights the challenges the city faces in its battle against opioids.
“This crisis is real, and it is a real wake-up call for individuals who have opioids or fentanyl in their homes,” Adams stated. “The mere contact is deadly for an adult and it’s extremely deadly for a child.”
Studies have revealed a disturbing trend of young people dying from unintentional drug overdoses, with opioids being the leading cause of fatal poisonings among young children.
A 2019 study published in the Journal of Pediatrics found that in cases where children were exposed to opioids, the substance was typically ingested orally rather than being touched or inhaled.
Authorities have not yet determined how the children came into contact with the drug.

What steps are being taken to determine how the children were exposed to opioids at the day care center and to ensure that it does not happen again in the future?
Before the tragedy occurred. They described Nicholas as a happy and energetic boy who brought joy to everyone around him.
The devastating incident has sent shockwaves throughout the community and has raised concerns about the safety and welfare of children in day care centers. Parents entrust their children to these facilities with the expectation that they will be in a safe and nurturing environment. This tragic event has shattered that trust and highlighted the need for stricter regulations and oversight in the child care industry.
It is unclear at this point how the children were exposed to opioids while at the day care center. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working diligently to determine the source of the drugs and how they ended up in the facility. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the far-reaching consequences of the opioid crisis that continues to plague our society.
The arrest of the day care center owner and the tenant living in the building raises questions about the responsibility and accountability of those in charge of these establishments. The charges they face, including depraved indifference murder, highlight the severity of the situation and the potential negligence that may have occurred.
As the community mourns the loss of Nicholas and prays for the recovery of the three other children, it is crucial that measures are taken to prevent similar tragedies in the future. This incident should prompt a comprehensive review of safety protocols and regulations for day care centers, including rigorous background checks for employees, regular inspections, and training on emergency procedures.
Additionally, it is imperative that parents and caregivers remain vigilant and engaged in the well-being of their children. This tragedy serves as a reminder that while day care centers play a vital role in our society, parents should always be aware of their child’s surroundings, ask questions, and report any concerns they may have.
The loss of a young life and the illness of three innocent children is an unspeakable tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families affected by this heartbreaking incident. It is our hope that justice is served, lessons are learned, and steps are taken to prevent any further harm to children in day care settings. The safety and well-being of our children should always be our utmost priority.
