Second IRS whistleblower discloses identity during congressional hearing on Hunter Biden investigation.
IRS Whistleblower Reveals Identity and Alleges Political Interference in Hunter Biden Probe
A previously anonymous Internal Revenue Service (IRS) whistleblower made a stunning revelation at a House Oversight Committee hearing on July 19. Special Agent Joseph Ziegler, who had been known as “Whistleblower X,” publicly identified himself and shared his concerns about political interference in the investigation of Hunter Biden.
Mr. Ziegler, a gay Democrat with 13 years of experience in the IRS Criminal Investigation Division, had previously given closed-door testimony with IRS Supervisory Special Agent James Shapley. They alleged misconduct in the federal probe of Hunter Biden’s tax matters. Now, they were ready to bring their concerns to the public’s attention.
Charges Recommended Against Hunter Biden
During the hearing, Mr. Ziegler revealed that lawyers from the Department of Justice (DOJ) Tax Division had recommended felony and misdemeanor charges against Hunter Biden for the 2017, 2018, and 2019 tax years. However, the whistleblower expressed concern that only a misdemeanor charge was pursued, despite the DOJ’s own policy.
In his prepared opening statement, Mr. Ziegler stated, ”We need to treat each taxpayer the same under the law.” He emphasized the importance of equal treatment and urged lawmakers to address the discrepancies in the handling of Hunter Biden’s case.
Mr. Shapley had previously informed the House Ways and Means Committee that felony charge recommendations were ignored by DOJ officials, raising further questions about the integrity of the investigation.
Plea Deal and Controversial Deductions
Following the whistleblower’s testimony, it was revealed that Hunter Biden had accepted a plea deal offered by the DOJ. He pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor tax charges and admitted to providing false information on his federal gun application. This deal is expected to spare him from jail time, with a court appearance scheduled for July 26.
Mr. Ziegler also highlighted questionable deductions made by Hunter Biden on his 2018 tax return. He claimed that expenses incurred during a six-week stay at an exclusive hotel were falsely reported as business expenses. The whistleblower pointed out contradictions between Hunter Biden’s statements in his memoir and the deductions claimed on his tax return.
The witness also revealed that Hunter Biden failed to report any income from his time as a member of the board of directors of a certain organization, despite widespread media coverage of his involvement.
