SEE IT: Mourners head to Buckingham Palace after Queen Elizabeth II’s death
A large crowd gathered outside Buckingham Palace after it was announced that Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning monarch in British history, died on Thursday. She was 96.
The news of her death comes just hours after it was reported that doctors were “concerned” about the queen’s health and had placed her under medical supervision at Balmoral Castle in Scotland until further notice. Doctors initially described her condition as being “comfortable,” later announcing she had “died peacefully.”
INSIDE THE ‘LONDON BRIDGE’ PLAN FOR THE QUEEN’S DEATH
Elizabeth reigned over the United Kingdom since 1952, ascending to the throne when she was just 25 years old. She was crowned in 1953 when she was 27. Since then, she has presided as the constitutional monarch over 15 prime ministers and outlasted 12 U.S. presidents.
The news of her death comes after months of poor health. While Elizabeth preferred to remain active, she had missed multiple events because of “episodic mobility problems,” including the State Opening of Parliament that occurred in May. Her absence was the first time in 59 years she had missed the event.

Her death marks the beginning of a national period of mourning and the end of the second Elizabethan era. Her eldest son, Charles, will ascend to the throne, and at the age of 73, he will be the oldest king to be crowned in the history of the U.K.
