In a video recorded ⁤before leaving the country, Booker recounted receiving a call from⁤ his chief of staff ⁢while he was out jogging, ​urging him to return⁤ to their hotel due to the ongoing attacks.

“When I got back to the hotel,” Booker said,‍ “there ⁣were thousands of rockets being launched.”

“I ⁤joined others in the bomb shelter or the⁤ stairwells of the hotel, frightened faces,” Booker shared in a video⁢ posted on X, formerly‍ Twitter, late on Oct. 8.

“There were​ children and⁤ elderly families, ​many Americans. There was a sense, a fear and worry … to many of us that there were horrific ⁢things going on around the country at that ⁢time.”

Israel faced a devastating ⁤attack over ⁢the weekend, ‌with a barrage of ‌rockets‍ and hundreds of Hamas operatives invading Israeli⁤ towns, targeting​ civilians, and kidnapping citizens‌ and soldiers.

Worst Toll Since 1973

According to‌ an Israel Defense Force (IDF) spokesperson, approximately 1,000 ⁢terrorists ‌were involved in the​ initial attack on Oct. 7, resulting in​ more casualties in a ‍single day than at any time since ‍the Yom Kippur War in‌ 1973.

The devastating impact of the attack was ‌echoed by Booker, who stated in his video: “Hundreds of people have been killed. ‍Thousands of people have been wounded in a ​level ⁢of attacks at a scale that is ​staggering and really has not been seen in this country ‌for over 50⁢ years.”

The senator called for an end to the conflict, emphasizing the need ‌to reject those who use terror as a weapon and advocating for peace, freedom,⁢ and human rights for both Palestinians and Israelis.

In the video caption, Booker expressed his shaken, angered, and ‍heartbroken ​feelings about⁢ the hundreds killed, thousands injured,‌ hostages taken, and all those directly affected by the ​terrorist‍ attacks.

Booker and his staff safely departed⁣ Israel on Oct. 8.

A statement from⁢ Booker’s⁢ office confirmed his⁤ early departure ​from the Israel trip, where he had arrived⁤ on Oct. 6 to participate⁢ in an‌ “Abraham ⁣Accords-focused⁤ N7 summit on regional economic integration in Tel Aviv” as a member of the Senate Foreign Relations‌ Committee.

Originally scheduled to stay until at least Oct. 10 for meetings, site⁢ visits, and a speech, Booker and his⁣ colleagues found themselves in Jerusalem when ‌Hamas launched⁢ their attacks⁤ on Oct. 7 and had to shelter in place for their ⁢safety.

Booker’s spokesperson, Maya Krishna-Rogers, stated on Oct. 8, ⁣”We are⁤ grateful that Sen. ⁣Booker and our ‌colleagues were able to safely depart Israel earlier today.”

In an earlier statement on Oct.⁣ 7, Booker condemned ⁢the attack by Hamas, expressing his solidarity with the people of Israel⁣ and the families ⁤affected by the violence.
