Sen. Schumer asks DOJ to expand reach to stop guns in places outside of his state of N.Y.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has urged the Department of Justice to expand its new gun control task force. On Sunday, the Democrat lawmaker first commended the DOJ for creating a team to address the surge in gun-related violence across the country, but went on to add it wasn’t enough.

His remarks come as New York City suffers from a sharp uptick in gun-related crimes with April reporting a 166 percent increase over last year. Schumer, however, claimed the fault was not New York’s.

“It is good news that the DOJ has set up strike forces to come to New York and other cities to deal wit the epidemic scourge of gun violence,” he stated. “But DOJ’s plans are insufficient because so many of the guns used in crimes come from other states, so we’re asking them to expand the domain of their task forces.”

Schumer went on to demand Congress pass new laws to extend the DOJ’s reach, but then backtracked while conceding that “even with the laws on the books” the strike force should be sufficient.
