The Senate confirmed Joe Biden’s pick to lead the EPA despite strong opposition from Republican senators. North Carolina Regulator Michael Regan was approved in a 66-to-34 vote on Wednesday.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell voted against the nomination. He said Regan supported far-left policies that would crush jobs in his state of Kentucky and across the U.S.
Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) echoed McConnell’s concerns, adding that Regan was bound to repeat the same mistakes of the Obama administration, which killed jobs in her state.
“Throughout his confirmation process, Secretary Regan did not commit to a different policy agenda than that of the Obama administration,” Capito noted. “An agenda that absolutely devastated, devastated my state and other energy-producing states.”
Regan’s appointment made him the first black man to lead the EPA.
