Senate Democrats plan to introduce a Supreme Court ethics bill, despite its expected failure, in an effort to engage voters.

Senate Democrats Push Supreme Court Ethics Legislation

Senate Democrats are⁢ gearing ⁢up to make a bold statement ‌by pushing Supreme Court ethics legislation to the full chamber.⁤ While the chances of it becoming law are low, they are determined to hold those who oppose the legislation accountable through a ‍full vote.

“The American people deserve to have ⁤all members of the judiciary… accountable to some kind of⁢ ethical ⁣standards,” said Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT). “And anybody who disagrees with that proposition should ‌be held accountable.”

With the Supreme Court often being overlooked by ⁤voters in elections, Democrats want to put Republicans on the record regarding the ethics legislation. In the upcoming 2024 Senate elections, Democrats will be defending multiple vulnerable seats, while Republicans will be⁣ on the offensive⁤ in nearly every competitive race.

Realistically, the legislation ‌faces an uphill battle ⁢as it⁢ requires a⁢ 60-vote threshold ⁢to ‍defeat a filibuster. Nine Republicans would need to flip their stance in order to move the bill to the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, where it is unlikely to even be brought up for a vote.

“This bill is dead as fried chicken,” remarked Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) at a recent press conference. “It’s going to get out of committee. It doesn’t have 60 votes in the Senate. And it sure ⁤can’t pass the House. So why do it? Why beat the living crap out‌ of the United ⁤States⁢ Supreme Court? I just don’t get it. I ⁢understand politics, but I just don’t get‍ it.”

The legislation, introduced by Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), aims ⁣to establish new requirements for financial disclosures and recusal⁤ in cases where a justice may have a ⁢conflicting interest. It⁢ was cleared ‌by the‍ Senate Judiciary Committee with a party-line vote of 11-10, with ‌Republicans ⁤opposing the legislation.

This legislation comes in the wake ‍of multiple reports on⁤ alleged unethical behavior by Justices ‍Samuel Alito, Sonia Sotomayor, and Clarence Thomas. The Supreme ⁣Court has‌ faced increased scrutiny regarding its ethics and disclosure standards since the initial⁣ report about Justice Thomas in April.

Chief Justice John‌ Roberts has defended the high court amidst these questions, emphasizing their commitment to ⁣upholding the highest standards of conduct.
