Senator commends federal probe of ‘barbaric’ experiments at Pitt University
Senator Steve Daines Applauds Federal Investigation into University of Pittsburgh’s Alleged Illegal Fetal Tissue Harvesting
Senator Steve Daines (R-Montana) has expressed his support for the federal investigation into the University of Pittsburgh following accusations of illegally harvesting fetal tissue from aborted babies for experimentation.
Last month, shocking emails obtained by the Center for Medical Progress (CMP) and Judicial Watch revealed that the Department of Health and Human Services inspector general had been looking into Pitt’s fetal tissue experiments, which were funded in part by the National Institute of Health. These experiments involved gruesome practices such as scalping 5-month-old fetuses and grafting their skin onto lab rats, as well as transporting fetal kidneys to other researchers.
Putting an End to Barbaric Research Practices
“After years of calling for an investigation into the barbaric research practices happening at the University of Pittsburgh, I’m glad to see the inspector general finally take this seriously. Exploiting the body parts of aborted children is not only repulsive but also ineffective in producing clinical treatments. It must be stopped,” said Senator Daines, founder of the Senate Pro-Life Caucus.
Senator Daines has been a vocal advocate for investigating Pitt and the government funding of these fetal tissue experiments. He signed a letter in September 2021, along with other congressional Republicans, urging HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra and then-NIH Director Francis Collins to look into the program.
Unethical and Ineffective Research
“Exploiting the body parts of aborted children for research purposes is repulsive and should stop, regardless of the outcome hoped for by researchers. Research using abortive fetal tissue is unethical, wrong, and has also been proven ineffective. Despite being used in clinical research since the 1920s, fetal tissue has not produced a single clinical treatment,” stated the letter from congressional Republicans.
The recently released emails confirm that an HHS investigation into Pitt has been ongoing since at least October 2021, following the congressional letter. The current status of the investigation remains unclear, as the HHS Office of Inspector General has neither confirmed nor denied its existence.

Representative Mike Kelly (R-PA), another signer of the September 2021 letter, has also expressed frustration with the lack of answers regarding the investigation. HHS directed him to a law firm hired by Pitt to examine the fetal tissue program.
Pitt has denied any wrongdoing and insists that its programs comply with federal laws.
Commitment to Compliance and Life-Saving Discoveries
“As we have stated in the past: Fetal tissue research plays a critical role in advancing life-saving discoveries. We remain committed to maintaining robust internal controls and to extending our record of compliance at the state and federal levels, and we take these responsibilities seriously,” said a Pitt spokesman in January 2022.

How do I donate fetal tissue?
Informed consent for fetal tissue donation may not be obtained until after a patient has given full informed consent for the abortion. II. A woman’s decision to donate fetal tissue must be voluntary and uncoerced. Providers must not offer any financial or other incentives to the patient. 1970s, fetal tissue has not led to any significant advancements in medical treatments or cures,” Senator Daines emphasized.
The investigation into the University of Pittsburgh’s practices began after a series of correspondence between university officials and government agencies were made public. The emails revealed the graphic nature of the experiments being conducted and the callousness with which the fetal tissue was being handled.
The Center for Medical Progress, a pro-life organization that has been exposing the illegal and unethical practices of the abortion industry, obtained the emails through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. These documents bring to light the disturbing reality of the use of fetal tissue in research, which often goes unnoticed by the general public.
Pitt’s Disturbing disregard for Ethics
The emails show a blatant disregard for ethical standards and a lack of respect for the dignity of human life. In one exchange, a Pitt official expressed excitement over the prospect of “obtaining fresh samples” of fetal brains. Another email detailed the process of harvesting fetal kidneys for shipment to other researchers.
Such practices not only exploit the remains of innocent unborn children but also raise serious questions about the integrity of research conducted at the university. The use of fetal tissue in experiments is highly controversial and has long been a subject of ethical debate.
Senator Daines, along with his colleagues, is calling for a thorough investigation and accountability for those involved in these barbaric practices. They are urging the Department of Health and Human Services to take immediate action and put an end to the illegal harvesting of fetal tissue.
The senator’s support for the investigation reflects the growing concern among pro-life advocates and the American public regarding the use of fetal tissue in research. It underscores the need for stricter regulations and oversight to ensure that research is conducted ethically and without violating the sanctity of human life.
A Step Towards Protecting Life
“Every human life is precious and deserves respect, from conception to natural death. The exploitation of aborted babies for scientific research is a grave injustice that must be addressed. I applaud the federal investigation into the University of Pittsburgh and hope that it leads to an end to these horrific practices,” Senator Daines concluded.
As the investigation unfolds, it is crucial that the truth is brought to light and that those responsible for the illegal harvesting and use of fetal tissue are held accountable. The case of the University of Pittsburgh serves as a wake-up call to the nation, highlighting the urgent need to re-evaluate the ethical boundaries of medical research involving human remains.
