Senator wants to probe Justice Alito’s statement on Congress’ inability to regulate Supreme Court.
This statement by Justice Alito came after the Senate Judiciary Committee approved a Democrat-backed Supreme Court ethics reform bill.
Sen. Whitehouse has submitted a letter to Chief Justice John Roberts, urging him to investigate Justice Alito’s acceptance of undisclosed gifts and his public comments on the ethics reform bill.
Sen. Whitehouse stated, “In the worst case facts may reveal, Justice Alito was involved in an organized campaign to block congressional action with regard to a matter in which he has a personal stake.”
Whitehouse’s Ethics Complaint
Sen. Whitehouse’s complaint references reports by ProPublica and the WSJ interview, highlighting Justice Alito’s acceptance of luxury travel and lodging from right-wing billionaires with business before the Court.
Justice Alito’s alleged acceptance of gifts includes a private jet trip to an all-expenses-paid Alaskan fishing vacation and exclusive lodging organized by right-wing billionaires. These gifts were not disclosed as required by federal law.
There has been a concerted effort from certain groups to change the current structure of the Supreme Court, with ProPublica being accused of receiving donations from these groups.
Tax documents also reveal that left-wing billionaire financier George Soros’s Foundation to Promote Open Society has given over $3 million to ProPublica.
Justice Alito refuted ProPublica’s claims in the WSJ interview, accusing the outlet of misleading the public.
Sen. Whitehouse emphasized the need for a formal complaint procedure within the Supreme Court and urged Chief Justice Roberts to take action.
Justices Disclosing Gifts
Amid Congress demanding increased scrutiny of SCOTUS judges, Justices Thomas and Alito recently filed disclosure forms detailing gifts and facilities undertaken, some previously undisclosed.
Justice Thomas revealed that GOP donor and billionaire Harlan Crow paid for private jet trips for the justice in 2022 to attend an event in Texas and to vacation at his friend’s New York estate.
Justice Thomas’s disclosure form covers the year 2022 and includes transportation, meals, and lodging provided by Harlan Crow and the Hatch Center.
Justice Thomas’s attorney emphasized his client’s commitment to transparency and adherence to the law.
Justice Thomas also disclosed flights taken due to increased security risks following a leaked draft majority opinion.
