Senators lash out over CDC firings – Washington Examiner
The article discusses a notable backlash from Georgia’s U.S. Senators,Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock,in response to the news that over 1,000 employees at the Centers for disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are being laid off. These firings are part of a broader trend affecting a large number of federal employees with less than a year’s service. The senators criticized the Trump management for what they described as reckless and politically motivated actions that compromise public health and safety. Ossoff emphasized the need for experienced personnel to protect Americans from diseases, while Warnock lamented that these layoffs endanger the country’s preparedness for future pandemics. The American Federation of Government Employees also condemned the firings, claiming they target employees not based on performance but rather due to political reasons and cronyism.
Senators lash out over CDC firings
(The Center Square) – Georgia’s two senators came out swinging after learning the news that more than 1,000 employees at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were losing their jobs.
The 1,300 CDC employees are some of up to 200,000 federal employees who have been on the job for less than a year. The CDC has 12,664 employees at its Atlanta headquarters, according to the Office of Personnel Management.
Georgia U.S. Sens. Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock lashed out at the Trump administration over the firings.
“President Trump’s indefensible, indiscriminate firing of more than 1,000 CDC personnel in a single day leaves Americans exposed to disease and devastates careers and livelihoods for the world’s most talented doctors and scientists, many of them here in Georgia,” Ossoff said.
Ossoff issued a preemptive strike in a video posted on Wednesday. He questioned who would protect Americans from diseases, including measles and tuberculosis.
“I insist that the Trump administration cease these unprecedented, partisan, political attacks on the CDC and let the scientists, doctors and epidemiologists at Georgia’s CDC do their jobs to defend the nations,” he said.
Warnock said in a social media post that the job losses are due to “the Trump administration’s reckless attacks on public health.”
“Make no mistake – these firings mean Americans are less safe from future pandemics,” Warnock said. “I will do everything I can to fight this.”
The agency received the news on Friday morning, according to ABC News.
The American Federation of Government Employees vowed to fight the firings. The organization represents 800,000 federal workers.
“This administration has abused the probationary period to conduct a politically driven mass firing spree, targeting employees not because of performance, but because they were hired before Trump took office,” Everett Kelley, the organization’s national president, said in a statement Friday. “These firings are not about poor performance – there is no evidence these employees were anything but dedicated public servants. They are about power. They are about gutting the federal government, silencing workers, and forcing agencies into submission to a radical agenda that prioritizes cronyism over competence.”
