Senators demand full disclosure on Saudi Arabia’s involvement in 9/11.
Lawmakers Call for Unredacted Documents on Saudi Arabia’s Role in 9/11
Top lawmakers on the Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations are demanding transparency from the FBI and the Department of Justice regarding Saudi Arabia’s involvement in the 9/11 attacks. Numerous records on this subject have remained classified, prompting Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Ron Johnson (R-WI) to request unredacted documents to better understand Saudi Arabia’s connection to the tragic event.
In a letter addressed to Attorney General Merrick Garland and FBI Director Christopher Wray, the senators emphasized the importance of transparency, particularly for the families who lost loved ones on that fateful day. They expressed their concerns about Saudi Arabia’s attempts to influence U.S. affairs and the need to uncover the truth about their role in the 9/11 attacks.
The senators previously requested full transparency from the U.S. government in July but had not received a response. They specifically asked for an unredacted copy of a record known as “Operation Encore,” which describes the links between Saudi nationals and the terrorists responsible for the plane crashes on 9/11. However, they have yet to receive any documents from the FBI or the DOJ.
Expressing their frustration, the senators wrote, “Your failure to respond to our letter only adds to our concerns about the U.S. government’s longstanding refusal to provide full transparency to the American public, and particularly for the families of 9/11 victims, about Saudi Arabia’s role in the 9/11 attacks.”
If the federal entities fail to respond to their latest request for unredacted documents, Blumenthal and Johnson warned that they would explore other methods to ensure compliance. Families and survivors of the 9/11 attacks have long advocated for more pressure on Saudi Arabia, urging U.S. officials to address their complicity in the terrorist attacks.

The families and survivors have called on President Joe Biden to prioritize a full and complete discussion of Saudi Arabia’s denial of their involvement in the attacks. While Biden has released some 9/11 documents, they have been heavily redacted, leaving lawmakers and victims unsatisfied and continuing to push for more information.
