A Tennessee father and businessman was tragically shot and killed in Chattanooga last week by a man with a lengthy criminal record, according to police.
The victim, Christopher Wright, 38, was downtown in the city on Thursday to attend his 20-year high school reunion, according to The Chattanoogan.
Wright, a successful local businessman, graduated from the city’s private Baylor School in 2003 and went on to graduate from Yale University.
The incident occurred on Market Street downtown just before midnight. Wright was involved in a verbal altercation with a man named Darryl Roberts, who is known as “Too Tall” on the streets.
According to witnesses and surveillance footage, Roberts and another man were talking when Wright walked by. Roberts said something to Wright, and a heated exchange ensued. Wright then walked away from Roberts, but Roberts followed him, pulled out a handgun, and shot him in the head.
Despite efforts by paramedics to save him, Wright tragically succumbed to his injuries.
Roberts, who has a lengthy criminal history with over 60 charges, including home invasion, assault, and theft, was arrested the day after the shooting.
Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly described the incident as “an isolated, senseless, and brazen act of gun violence.”
The Baylor School community and the mayor expressed their condolences to Wright’s family for their devastating loss.
